El Estación Costera de Investigaciones Marinas

Well, we've arrived in Las Cruces, Chile! This is the view from the marine lab (ECIM -for short: http://www.ecim.cl/) and my little dorm room is about 30ft away. It's the transition from spring to summer right now, so the weather is just perfect! I'm living at the station with two estudiantes extranjeros (foreign students), Nico (from Spain) and Juliet (from France), but on any given day at work there are about 20-25 people working here. Everyone is extremely nice, but the Chilean accent is incredibly difficult to understand - they also use a lot of slang words that are difficult to translate. All in all, it hasn't been such a difficult move or transition.

Work, however, is a different story! This is a LOW tide in Chile! I'm in a full wetsuit trying to attach a blue scrubby-kitchen sponge (like a Tuffy) to a submerged rock with wave after wave pounding into me! I'm told that this was an EASY day and that it can get far worse. As scary as it is, it's still pretty exhilarating. I still don't know what I'll specifically be studying here, but I'm having a great time tagging along with people to see what their research is like. I hope I find a project HIGH in the intertidal!
